Everybody starts woodworking as a complete novice. Start here, learning about hand tools, wood, and simple techniques in this introductory class. We will start first by showing you the basics of woodworking tools, how to buy them, use them and keep them sharp. There is a big difference in hand tools and their quality. We will show you the first tools you will need, from measuring and marking tools like squares and marking knives to cutting tools like chisels, files, saws, and planes. We will teach you about wood and its many qualities. What is a good piece of wood? How do you choose your wood? Which piece do you avoid? You will get practice with a variety of different woods so you can feel the difference in your hands.

We start our first project by building a wooden mallet that will introduce you to measuring and lay-out for a through mortise and tenon joint. This incredibly strong joint might be the first you’ll ever have made, but it’s straightforward once you see how. We start by drilling out and chopping for the mortise and fit a tenon to it and a wedge to the tenon. The mallet handle then gets shaped to fit your hand using the band saw then rasps, files, and spoke shaves.

Next we will build a great lidded box using finger joints. You could put letters, papers, phones, remotes, three pairs of socks, or all your change in it. But it’s guaranteed to be a project you’ll be proud to say that you made. Or better yet give it to someone who will treasure it forever. These finger joints are visible or through joints and give a great amount of gluing strength even though we like to pin these joints for decoration. You will learn how to hand cut the joints for this box, discover how great hand planing is for cleaning up a surface, and get assembly tips and techniques to glue up the box and a lid for it.

If you have been considering woodworking as a hobby or as a craft to investigate, this is the class for you. Woodworking is about as much fun as you can have by yourself on a rainy day. Come and find out why.
